When will I be able to demand credit for a delayed American Airlines flight?

"Airlines do not guarantee their schedules," according to the US Department of Transportation (DOT). Therefore, in the US, when flights are postponed or canceled, airlines are not expected to pay passengers.

This ensures that a delayed domestic flight would not reimburse you in the US.

However, while flying with American Airlines, you Will demand credit for a flight delay under EU regulation. According to EC261, when your flight leaves the European Union (EU) and lands in the European Union (EU), you are liable for delayed flight reimbursement from American Airlines. US. U.S.

In order to apply for credit for flight delays under European law, you must arrive at your final destination at least 3 hours late.

How much will I get for my postponed American Airlines flight in compensation?

If the duration of delay at your final destination is between 3 and 4 hours, 300€ ($330)
If your flight arrives at least 4 hours late, 600€ ($660)

As a rule of thumb, the amount of flight delay coverage varies according to the distance of the trip, in compliance with the EU regulation:

  • For flights shorter than 1,500km, 250€
  • For flights between 1,500 and 3,500km, 400€
  • For flights longer than 3,500km, 600€

In fact, you will be liable for a deferred flight compensation of €600 because the distance between Europe and the US is longer than €600.

However, note the exception to the rule: if the flight is postponed by more than 3 hours but less than 4 hours, American is delayed. Airlines are permitted to decrease the amount of reimbursement by 50 percent. You'd have the right to "only" 300€.

Will I get a refund for a delayed American Airlines flight?

Passengers who are victims of flight delays greater than 5 hours upon departure can seek reimbursement of their flight ticket in compliance with EU regulations. The balance can either be paid in cash or be added to the bank account or credit card of the traveler.

Bear in mind that the right to a refund for passengers varies from your right to compensation: this means you will get both. You can demand a refund if your flight has not yet taken off 5 hours after the planned departure time, only if you meet your destination.

You may still demand a delayed flight compensation, more than 3 hours late.

When am I entitled for reimbursement from American Airlines for a canceled flight?

As for delays, whether a flight is canceled, the Department of Transportation does not require airlines to pay their passengers money. In order to be paid for the termination of a flight, passengers shall depend on EU Regulation 261/2004.

You must satisfy any of the following conditions to seek credit for your canceled American Airlines flight:

- You have been notified less than 14 days in advance of the American Airlines flight cancellation or have not been informed, and
The canceled flight was to leave the EU and land in the U.S.

If your replacement flights arrive more than 4 hours late, 600€ ($660)
300€ ($330) if your replacement flight is less than 4 hours late to your final destination.
